Stansted Airport, located in the county of Essex, lies 30 miles northeast of London. Considered the third largest UK airport after Gatwick and Heathrow the airport features a terminal with an award winning mix of engineering and architectural design resulting in a 'floating' roof supported by inverted triangular supports. This design makes the best possible use of natural light which is a distinct advantage in todays environmentally friendly world.
Construction finished in 1991 with the design team Fosters & Partners and Arup and project architect Spencer de Grey being given the Supreme Award of 1991 for the futuristic design and construction that still appears ahead of its time today some 16 years later.
The terminal benefits from three boarding piers that are connected by a pedestrian bridge and two people mover systems. In April 2007 a major expansion began to the terminal building to increase the airports capacity to handle baggage and to increase the facilities available for immigration. The overall floor-space available will be increased by around 600 square metres.
