Two Women Face Jail Over Drunken Airliner Rampage
Monday 28th July 2008A drinking session onboard an XL Airways airliner in which two women hurled abuse at cabin crew and tried to open the aircraft doors mid-flight could see them jailed for a year with fines totalling £20,000.
The drunk women aged 26 and 27, who had been smoking in the aircraft toilets and drinking heavily, shouted abuse at cabin crew when they refused to serve them any more alcohol, they are believed to then have tried to open the doors of the airliner, the reasons behind this are not yet completely clear. To prevent the women opening the doors and potentially causing the aircraft to crash, staff were forced to grapple them and force them onto the floor where they placed plastic handcuffs on them. There are also reports of one of the women slapping a mother onboard.
The pilot of the aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in Frankfurt where the women were arrested and questioned. They were later allowed to leave to return to the UK but could still face trial in Germany on charges of grievous bodily harm and violating air traffic regulations.
