A Qantas Boeing 747 flight from Hong Kong to Melbourne has had to make an emergency landing after a door 'popped' immediately depressurising the aircraft cabin.

Due to the height and extreme cold that would be experienced at the altitude the aircraft was cruising at it would have been necessary for the plane to rapidly lose heigh to prevent the passengers from suffering the effects of sub-zero temperatures. The aircraft was flying at an altitude of 30,000 feet when the incident occured, and ended up plunging to 10,000 feet whilst oxygen masks hung from the ceiling that were triggered due to the depressurisation.

Passengers have described hearing a loud bang as the door 'popped' and have described a strong wind in the cabin which is consistent with what you would expect if an aircraft depressuries in mid flight. The passengers have also described that after the initial drama of the door 'popping' all passengers were completely silent as the aircraft approached the runway for its emergency landing.

There has been widespread praise of the pilot for bringing the aircraft safely into land with passengers apparently applauding him when he left the aircraft. The cabin crew have also been praised for keeping passengers calm onboard whilst the drama unfolded. Investigations are now taking place in order to discover the case of the incident and why the door 'popped' during the flight. Any developments on the drama will be covered here on Compare Airport Parking.
