Qantas Announce Large Job Cuts
Friday 18th July 2008Australian national carrier Qantas have announced that they are to cut 1,500 jobs amongst their 36,000 strong staff. Most of these job cuts relate to their Australian workforce with a couple of hundred jobs going in Tuscon and London in addition.
Plans that Qantas had to hire a further 1,200 employees has been frozen and the airlines planned growth has been completely suspended/cancelled. The cuts are futher proof of the crisis in the worldwide aviation business that seems to be crippling airlines in all but the Gulf states. This view is being backed up at the Farnborough Airshow as orders for new aircraft made by airlines from this region remain strong.
The redundancies at Qantas are not just limited to the general workforce however as it has been indicated that around 20% of head office and management jobs are also set to get the chop. Not only workforce is being cut as the airline have indicated that they will be retiring 22 aircraft from their fleet that are ageing, and would reduce their overall aircraft tally to 206 from their current fleet of 228 aircraft.
