B-17 Bomber Visits Prestwick Airport

Friday 4th July 2008

Nearly 65 years since the Liberty Belle B-17 made its journey across the atlantic to England, it has marked the occasion by completing the trip again.

On June the 30th the aircraft left its base in Georgia travelling north to Bangor, Maine and Goose Bay in Canada  where it made a stop-over. It then left to fly to Narsarsuaq in Greenland where it took on some much-needed fuel. The crew then flew the World War 2 bomber on to the 'Lost Squadron" area in Greenland to pay tribute to fellow B-17 aircraft and crew lost in the conflict. They then continued on to Reykjavik in Iceland. The B-17 then arrived at Prestwick Airport and will fly on to RAF Framlingham, which will mean the aircraft has travelled a total of 7,800 miles.

The B-17 bomber will be part of tributes paid to servicemen lost in the Second World War and will be a fitting tribute to an aircraft that was very influentual in the conflict.
