Liverpool Airport Celebrates 75th Anniversary
Monday 30th June 2008The 75th anniversary of Liverpool Airport has taken place amidst torrential rain that could still not dampen the spirits of the aircraft enthusiasts that had gathered for the Jetstream Club's annual aviation event.
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight had originally been booked however minus the Lanchaster bomber as it was unavailable for the display, however a DC3 Dakota was to substitute the aircraft. However the weather meant that only the Dakota was able to fly a display at the event and the Spitfire and Hurricane were forced to stay in Kidderminster.
Other aircraft such as the Huey helicopter which is believed to be the only flying example in the country fascinated the crowd with members of the public being permitted access to the machine and to look around the various workings of the Vietnam-era helicopter. The local Merseyside Police helicopter was also at the show albeit f minus one hour when it had to take-off to answer an emergency call. Also in the skies were a De Havilland Dove and Dragon Rapide aircraft that were running pleasure flights for visitors to the event.
In addition to the aircraft visitors were treated by access to the Beatles Balcony on the old terminal building dating back to the 1930's. Anyone climbing up there was treated to magnificent views and a chance to think what it would have been like standing there with thousands of screaming fans below. The excitement was not just limited to the air however as also attending the event were racing cars, hot rods old fire engines and motorcycles.
On the 4th of July there will be a birthday dinner for the airport that will mark its 75th anniversary. All monies raised from this event will be divided between Marie Curie Cancer Research, North West Air Ambulance and the Jetstream Club.
