Another Expense For Airport Travellers
Tuesday 24th June 2008Just as you thought things may settle down at airports in the UK, passengers have been hit with another charge. This time it is luggage trolleys that are being targeted with it now costing £1 to use a trolley if you are visiting Luton Airport. Those who are returning home from their holidays may be even more surprised as those short on British currency will have to pay a hefty two Euros for a trolley.
The move is sure to net the owners of Luton Airport, a Spanish group TBI, millions of pounds in revenue from a system that will be very similar to that used at supermarkets - however those systems return your money at the end of your shopping trip.
There has been widespread criticism of the move such as that from the Air Transport Users Council who have suggested that elderly people who do not wish to pay for the service could attempt to carry luggage that they are not capable of moving, and cause themselves an injury.
It is expected that the profit from the new trolley charges will be shared amongst Luton Airport and the supplier of the coin-operated trolleys - Bagport, based in Germany. Luton Airport has responded to the criticisms by stating that the new contract with Bagport will ensure high quality trolleys are available as needed, however many would argue that they have never found it very hard to find a trolley at the airport before the charges were put in place.
