Crewman Dies Whilst Trapped In Saga Rose Hull

Thursday 12th June 2008

A Filipino member of staff working aboard the Saga Rose cruise ship has died in an accident at Southampton Docks.

The man is believed to have entered the ballast tank of the Saga Rose along with another member of the Filipino staff and got locked inside. One of the men managed to remain conscious throught the time locked in the tank however the other man did not due to what appears to be a lack of oxygen. The men were eventually pulled to safety but one was pronounced dead at approximately 4pm on Wednesday.

The man that was rescued is said to be shocked and devastated at the news his collegue was dead. A Filipino priest was called to speak to the man after he was released from hospital.

When the man was discovered in the tank the emergency services attempted to revive him for approximately an hour, unfortunately the efforts were in vain. His body has been recovered from the scene. According to the Saga group anyone wishing to enter the ballast tank of the ship has to gain writted permission and a safety officer has to accompany them down there as that particular area is out of bounds. The circumstances of the incident are sure to become clear in the next few days as an investigation is made by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch and the Hampshire Constabulary.
