Twenty Eight Passengers Killed In Sudan Airbus A310 Fire
Wednesday 11th June 2008A passenger aircraft has burst into flames during landing at Khartoum Airport in Sudan. Reports indicate that at least 28 people were killed in the incident. Currently 53 people are missing whilst emergency services search for them. It is believed that 123 have survived the disaster.
The aircraft involved was an Airbus A310 and had over 200 people onboard. It had flown from Amman via Damascus in Jordan and had apparently been landing in poor weather conditions. It was on the ground and moving along the runway when one of the engines burst into flames.
The director of Khartoum Airport Yusaf Ibrahim has spoken about the incident and explained that the aircraft was safely on the ground and in contact with the control tower regarding the correct gate they were to use when the explosion in the engine occured. According to Abbas al-Fadini who is a member of the parliment of Sudan the right engine of the aircraft was the one that experienced the explosion.
It is still not known what caused the fire but in the next few days many are hopeful of some answers as to what happened in the engine.
