Liquid Confusion Lumbers Airport With One MIllion Cans Of Deodorant
Tuesday 3rd June 2008Passengers are still confused about the liquids that they are allowed to take on an aircraft. The result is Edinburgh Airport being lumbered with one million cans of deodorant.
BAA have released the statistics indicating that on the average week the airport confiscates half a tonne of cans from passengers who were not aware that deodorant cans are considered liquids. It is not only deodorant that has been confiscated in large numbers however, as shaving gel, whisky and bottles of water also make up a significant quantity of seized items.
The pity is that all the liquids and their containers are disposed of by the airport, although information is not available to see if this is done for recycling. Several passenger groups have requested that information for passengers is clearer before they arrive at the airport to cut down on the time it takes to remove and dispose of liquids. This will also save passengers from the expense of disposing of these items.
A security officer at Edinburgh Airport - Stevie Hastie explained that it was a shame that passengers were not clearer about what they could and could not take on the aircraft and it did seem like a huge waste. However he did explain that the majority of passengers were very understanding when it was explained to them that they could not take these items onto the aircraft.
It is hoped that the airlines will take some notice of the findings and do that little bit more to ensure passengers are aware of what they can and cannot take onboard an aircraft.
