Iata Head Criticises Heathrow Airport
Monday 2nd June 2008The head of the International Air Transport Association (Iata), Giovanni Bisignani has criticised Heathrow Airport, stating that service levels are a "national embarrasment."
His criticisms have not ended there as he has scorned the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) for allowing Heathrow Airport to raise charges by 86% in the next five years. He went on to say that this would only occur in "monopolyland."
It has been predicted by the trade body that most airlines will lose approximately $2.3bn in 2008 alone. However they had previously forecast a loss of $4.5bn. The Iata trade body is a representative of 94% of companies providing air travel services and has blamed the rise in oil prices and a weak global economy for the problems. Mr. Bisignani said in an interview with BBC News that problems have occured due to airlines ordering aircraft during a boom that was however, the product of a slowdown.
