Ferry Services From Dover Port Suspended
Wednesday 21st May 2008A fishermen strike in France has resulted in ferry services to Northern French ports being suspended after the fishermen blockaded many of them.
Both P&O and Brittany Ferries have confirmed that the ports that are currently blocked are Dunkirk, Boulogne, Saint Malo and Calais. According to a spokesperson for Brittany Ferries the ports at Caen, Cherbourg and Roscoff are not currently affected although this may change.
The protest is expected to last for at least one day however it is not clear how much longer it could go on. The next few hours should give a clearer indication.
So far the protests have been in the form of blockades at fuel docks and on roads. As a result of this action many petrol stations in the La Rochelle area are running out of fuel leading to customers panic buying and causing a greater shortage. Diesel prices in the country have doubled since November last year leading to this action, much the same as we have seen in the UK which have resulted in small protests that have caused little disruption.
