Fred Olsen In Cooking Oil Fuel Solution
Monday 19th May 2008Fred Olsen Cruises are to launch an environmentally friendly initiative by processing their cooking oil into a clean and efficient fuel source.
Any waste oil from the ships is collected at Southampton and Dover ports in containers that have been built specially for the purpose by Bio Driven - a Canterbury based bio-diesel production company. When the collected oil is analysed, filtered and washed, it also has the glycerine removed. Once all the glycerine is removed from the oil the impurities are then removed, as well as some final finishing techniques, whereupon it is finally ready to be packed and shipped out for its use as an environmentally friendly fuel.
The company behind the technique, Bio Driven will also donate 5p per litre of fuel they process to projects located in Zimbabwe. Bio Driven have also stated that the entire production process of preparing the oil is carbon negative ensuring that there are no 'hidden pollutants' due to the production process.
