Residents sad at the loss of Sheffield Airport
Monday 12th May 2008In April 2008, Sheffield airport finally ended it's license as a general use airport.
For the last few years the airport had been operating at a loss. The Airport will now, over the course of the next few years, be transformed into the new Sheffield Blue Skies Business Park, with over 900,000 square feet of state of the art commercial and office accommodation, with the chance to deliver over 2,000 jobs over the next ten years.
The aviation sector will not lose out completely, as part of the development, the business park will retain an updated heliport. The heliport is already used by both the South yorkshire police and Yorkshire Air Ambulance service helicopters.
Some residents were upset at the loss of Sheffield airport, claiming that reasons such as the area was too hilly to extend the runway were not valid reasons for closure. Other residents actually prefer using East Midlands Airport, or will start using Robin Hood airport.
Most residents are sad that their city, the size that it is, no longer has its own airport and leaves the club of cities with airports.
