Manchester Airport May Not Reach Carbon Neutral Goal
Friday 25th April 2008New research has indicated that the efforts that Manchester Airport have made to get their passengers onto public transport has not rubbed off on employees, which now appears to be jeapordising the airports goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2015.
The results have been obtained from the 2007 employee travel survey in which it shows that employee numbers driving to work by themselves by car only went down by 1% in 2007, compared with 2006. The survey shows that 79% of those surveyed travelled to work by car, with 69% travelling in the car alone. Of these 6% travel as passengers and 4% have a passenger in their car.
The number of employees using public transport and other means to get to work is disapointing for the airport. Bus use went up from 1% to 9% and train usage went up 3%. The survey also indicated that 2% of staff travel by bicycle, 1% by motorcycle and 2% by cab or taxi.
Manchester Airport will clearly be downheartened by the results as the change from 2006 is negligable and puts their 2015 carbon neutral plans in jepoardy. According to recent research 60% of the airports carbon is emitted from passengers and staff.
