Lost bags cost airport and airlines billions of dollars
Thursday 17th April 2008Over 42 million bags were lost, wrongly handled, delayed during 2007 it is reported.
The industry as a whole lost over $3 billion which has been attributed to high volumes of passengers and tighter schedules and of course the increase in security measures.
It is estimated that the industry handles around 2 1/4 billion individual baggage items per year.
These figures are based on 2007 numbers, so many people will be running a comparrision next year, to see what impact the Heathrow Terminal 5 baggage problems will have on these numbers. At it's worse stage, it was reported that over 25 thousand bags were involved at the first week of the new terminal opening.
