Investment For Stansted Airport Police
Wednesday 9th April 2008Stansted Airport Police are set to benefit from a £1 million cash injection to help them in the fight to keep Stansted Airport secure and free from crime.
The 93 police officers that currently work at Stansted Airport have achieved a 12% reduction in crime at the airport and a very healthy 61% detection rate (number of crimes that are reported and solved) in the last year gaining praise from their Chief Inspector Ian Grüneberg.

Where the money would be spent is not set in stone however Chief Inspector Grüneberg has indicated that the money would pay for 18 new police officers, an extra inspector and two new vehicles. This increase in resources would help the force increase their detection rate and make Stansted Airport a safer and more secure environment. as well as allowing new procedures and initiatives to be undertaken.
The airport has already introduced a number of theft and crime prevention schemes at the airport that have showed their worth in a number of ways. Operation Bruno targetted baggage thefts at the airport and managed to reduce theft from approximately ten instances a week to just one. In total Operation Bruno made twenty three arrests and nineteen search warrants were issued as well as jailing the baggage theft ringleader for a total of eight months.
Another prevelant problem at the airport had been the theft of rental vehicles that was stopped almost overnight by the adoption of a thumbprint scheme, an achievement that Chief Inspector Grüneberg is very proud of. The initiatives do not stop there however with plans already in place for dog patrols and a system for targetting offensive weapons already on the cards for the coming months making Stansted Airport an ever-safe and secure airport to fly from
