More Problems At Heathrow Terminal 5

The disruption and problems at Heathrow Terminal 5 reached the 12th day yesterday as snow and poor weather conditions forced British Airways to cancel many flights from the brand new terminal.

The heavy snow meant that 50 flights were cancelled on Sunday resulting in the grand total of flights cancelled over the weekend reaching 130. Sunday morning saw runways closing whilst they were de-iced compounding the problems experienced on Saturday when compter problems meant that the baggage system at Terminal 5 had to be shut down. The resulting manual sorting of baggage caused many delays and created more cancelled flights.

It had been hoped that problems that had plagued the brand new terminal building since it was opened would have been rectified by Saturday however this never occured and the terminal is still attempting to return services to a normal level. Since Terminal 5 opened on the 27th of March over 20,000 pieces of luggage have been lost and hundreds of flights have been cancelled. There remains little doubt that the terminal is still struggling to catch up to the levels of service passengers are expecting and has cost BA more than £16 million so far.
