Flybe Searches For Actors For Their Flights

Monday 31st March 2008

Airline Flybe have advertised for actors to fill their seats in order to avoid a £280,000 commercial fine for not carrying enough passengers by the 31st of March.

Rules stated that the airline must have carried 15,000 passengers by the 31st of March in order to avoid the fine meaning that Flybe chose to take an alternative route to avoid the fine. Norwich Airport has criticised Flybe for "pointlessly damaging the environment" with Flybe responding by branding the airport "intransigent and greedy."

The deal that Flybe has with Norwich Airport requires them to carry 15,000 passengers during the 2007/2008 financial year however by the 27th of March Flybe was advertising "free flights to Dublin this weekend!" as they attempted to gain passenger numbers to avoid the fine. In addition to this they advertised on a website named StarNow. Their advertisment stated, "extras aged 16+ needed for paid work flying to Dublin." It promised £80 or over every day and said that it could require up to three flights a day.

Norwich Airport responded to the action with Managing Director Richard Jenner saying: "It doesn't seem to be in the spirit of the agreement." Flybe have responded to criticism of their action and the additional pollution it caused and said it would be offsetting its carbon emissions and that actors did not need to be used in the end.
