Rail Upgrade Planned For Stansted Airport
Friday 28th March 2008
BAA have submitted a planning application for the construction of a rail expansion into the airport.
Stansted have already entered a planning application for a second runway as well as this new rail application in its continuing drive to expand the airport facilities. The construction of a second runway alone is expected to draw 68 million passengers by 2030. The rail application is a part of the runway planning with the project codenamed (G2).
The rail system would be a natural requirement if the runway planning was to go ahead as improved facilities wou;d be needed by the increased demand that the runway would create. The new rail extension would require another tunnel and airport station to complement the new route.
The project is projected to create 13,000 new jobs both in construction and employment at the station. A current rail service named the Stansted Express has trains operating every 15 minutes taking approximately 45 minutes. This new service would complement this current route.
The road extensions that would need to be made in conjunction with the new rail system would be on the M11 and A120 as the increased traffic would require a much-needed improvement to these airport links
