Livingstone and Johnson Clash Over Heathrow Airport Expansion
Thursday 27th March 2008The Mayor of London Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson who aims to topple him in the election on the 1st of May have clashed over the possibility of Heathrow Airport expanding. Johnson who is a Conservative MP believes that London needs an airport with more capacity and has proposed a new site on the banks of the Thames Estuary, however Livingstone the current Mayor of London is strongly against the plans.
Johnson has claimed that the location of Heathrow Airport is a "1950's planning area" and says that if he were elected as London Mayor he would lead a team to plan development of the airport on a site in the Thames estuary. Livingstone however opposes any development of the airport in the South East of England.
Livingstone and Johnson however agree on the matter of a third runway which has been proposed by BAA as they have similar fears of the noise and environmental damage that could be caused. Johnsons plans however may not be the way forward as the government has ruled out his astuary airport plans due to the projected costs and damage to the environment.
