Fingerprint Scanning Delayed At Heathrow Airport
Thursday 27th March 2008Biomentric fingerprinting at Heathrow Airport for domestic passengers has been delayed due to issues raised by the Information Commissioner's Office. BAA have confirmed the decision in a statement saying that the facility would be "temporarily delayed." The delay followed on from a meeting that was between the information comissioner and the Border and Immigration Agency.

Terminal 5 has now been opened using photographic identification technology which is already in use at Heathrow Airport. BAA have stated thatthey will be "working closely with the information commissioner and the Home Office over the next few weeks to agree the best approach going forward."
The problems began to arise when the ICO contacted BAA to inform them that they had concerns and informed them that they felt there "appears to be no basis in UK law for passenger fingerprinting at Heathrow." An ICO statement went on to say, "It is essential that, before introducing new systems and technologies which could accelerate the growth of a surveillance society, full consideration is given to minimising the impact on privacy and that data-protection safeguards are in place to limit any risks."
