Manchester Airport Police To Crack Down On Football Hooligans

Tuesday 25th March 2008

Manchester police are to target football hooligans who attempt to fly to France for the England - France friendly football match on Wednesday evening.

Operation Pinto will utilize plain and uniformed officers to spot potential trouble makers who try to board aircraft, as well enforcing current banning orders placed on known trouble makers that already have bans handed out by The Football Banning Order Authority. This authority have already sent out letters to all known trouble makers informing them that they are not permitted to travel, and those with existing banning orders are also required by law to surrender their passports to their local police station when football matches abroad are taking place.

Police are to check and monitor several routes that trouble makers may use to get to the match to prevent trouble from English fans. Chief Inspector Robert Tinsley from Manchester Airport Police said, "As with all operations like this, we are sending out a clear message to people intending to travel to commit violence to think again. Plain clothes officers will be working to spot known troublemakers and uniformed officers will be providing a high-visibility presence at the airport, talking to fans and monitoring the situation. In past operations, the vast majority of people approached by officers were genuine supporters who were co-operative and understanding, but we have been successful in stopping a number of known hooligans from travelling."
