Mystery Of 'Meteor Ice' Baffling School
Tuesday 25th March 2008The mystery of where a huge chunk of ice came from that literally fell out of the sky is continuing to baffle a school in Birmingham.
The school was quick to act when it experienced the ice landing in the playground and stored it in a freezer in case further analysis was needed on it. The ice was about the size of a shoebox and and came very close to hitting the school children at Yardleys Secondary School in Reddings Lane, Tyseley. The incident occured on the 22nd of February 2008.

Suspicion has fallen on the ice coming from a passing aircraft however a spokesperson for the Birmingham International Airport said, "We have carried out analysis of the ice and are satisfied that there is no evidence of it having fallen off the outside of a plane. We also don't think it was toilet waste, so we are trying to find out if it's any other waste that has fallen from an aircraft. It's difficult to say exactly what it was, but it's definitely not toilet water." The spokesperson also added "we have gone over our flight paths and it wasn't one of ours, so it could have come from a higher aircraft operating from another airport."
The Yardleys community co-ordinator John Roden said "This thing literally fell out of the sky and landed on the playing fields, narrowly missing a group of children who were going out to a games lesson. The kids thought it was a comet and it flew through the sky before hitting the ground near them."
The ice left a significant hole in the ground where it landed and John Roden added, "Without doubt, it would have killed anyone it landed on."
