British Airways Prepare To 'Move House'
Tuesday 25th March 2008British Airways is preparing to 'move home' in a huge re-location procedure that will see nearly all operations from the UK's biggest airline operate from the brand new building. Heathrow Terminal 5 will become fully operational on Thursday the 27th of March with the first flight expected at 4.50am from Hong Kong.
The final part of the massive re-location will occur on Wednesday when the southern runway will be closed from 11pm until 4am on the Thursday whilst 27 aircraft, 360 baggage trailers, 240 cargo containers and 120 cars and vans are moved to their new home at Terminal 5. The new operations at Terminal 5 are to use a sophisticated baggage system that it is hoped will help to rid British Airways of its poor lost luggage record. The new system will be able to handle 12,000 bags every hour which is an impressive number.
In addition to material items many staff will need to make the transition to Terminal 5. Staff totalling 2,500 will be moving to Terminal 5 as well as another 3,000 moving to Terminal 5 from Terminal 4 on the 30th of April. As well as the terminal staff 13,000 cabin crew and 2,800 pilots will also move from Terminal 4 on the 1st of May.
Planning for the first flight on Thursday is going on currently to prevent any problems that may occur in the lead-up to the flights arrival. The planners have been studying weather forecasts and planning for any problem that may occur to ensure the opening of services at Terminal 5 goes without a hitch.
