Air Passengers Are 'At Risk'
Thursday 20th March 2008A retired air traffic controller has told BBC News that air passengers are at risk due to the pressure being placed upon the operators.
The retired air traffic controller who wished to remain anonymous described the air traffic control system at Heathrow as an 'errant culture' that put service provision before safety. The British air traffic control system NATS has reacted to the claims saying that safety is their priority.
The unamed ex-worker who has spent 27 years working at Heathrow airport air traffic control is apparently well known to NATS. According to the ex-worker he was asked to compile a report in February shortly before he left highlighting any examples of dangerous safety problems involving aircraft. When he had compiled the report it showed 12 examples of incidents that had been confirmed by his manager as "very accurate." The report was showed to BBC News who were able to look over it.
The figures indicate that Heathrow Airport is running at 98% capacity which leaves very little room for error. Evidence also shows that on the 28th of September 2007 an air traffic controller put aircraft closer than they should have been in order to maintain the efficient running of the airport apparently endangering the public.
