Wednesday 19th March 2008

Cocaine to the value of £120,000 has been seized by East Midlands customs officers hidden inside footballs.

The packets of cocaine were sewn into the lining of five footballs and on their way to the London area. Estimates indicate that the drug had a value of approximately £40,000 however once 'cut' with other substances could have been worth twice or even three times as much.

An East Midlands customs detection manager said "Our officers have carried out a first class operation to seize this consignment of cocaine destined for the streets of the UK. We will continue our efforts to detect and disrupt organised crime and smuggling, to reduce the availability of these dangerous drugs."

This latest attempt to get drugs through customs is after recent hauls including cocaine mixed with dried foodstuffs and mince as well as 6kg of Heroin being discovered amongst Afghan rugs worth more than half a million pounds.
