Stansted Airport Cigarette Seizures
Wednesday 19th March 2008Stansted Airport has reported that in the last three months they have seized millions of cigarettes as they attempt to be illegally smuggled into the UK.
In total 4.5 million cigarettes and nearly a ton of hand rolling tobacco has been seized during standard operations to cut-down on smuggling. Several examples of attempts by passengers have been released by the airport such as a man that strapped cigarettes around his waist as well as a man who claimed to be coming to the UK for a holiday although he had no clothes or personal belongings, just a case crammed full of cigarettes.

Figures indicate that smuggling is a large problem in the UK and it has been estimated that between eight and eighteen percent of all tobacco consumed in the UK is counterfeit or smuggled as HMRC seized around 1.9 billion cigarettes in 2007. Estimates indicate that the economy loses around £1.25 million every year due to these activities.
All the seized tobacco is recycled and burned to provide power for the national grid, for example, one ton of tobacco would keep a 100 watt lightbulb burning for an impressive 18 months.
