MP Calls For Protection Of Heathrow Link

Wednesday 12th March 2008

A local MP has demanded guarantees that the rise in airport charges announced by the CAA and BAA will not affect the link between Heathrow and Teeside. The fallout from the decision will most ikely fall on passengers with a rise in ticket prices and has been described by the Stockton North MP Frank Cook as “an appalling example of a public body bailing out a private company.”

Durham Tees Valley has been linked to Heathrow through its air route for 37 years now and fears are that the increase in prices could end that. Mr. Cook says however that he was pleased that BMI have confirmed that they remain committed to the current route that they currently run from Durham Tees Valley to Heathrow Airport.

Arguments for the increase in charges have been that they are needed to fund improvements to the airport facilities however concerns have been voiced from several quarters that the CAA should not allow BAA to use any of the increased charges to fund their huge debts.
