Homeless Chef Claims He Has Lived At Gatwick Airport Since The 1980's

A chef who used to earn £80,000 per year who was arrested and put through the courts for living at Gatwick Airport for around four years has now admitted "i've actually been living there since the eighties."

Anthony Delaney has admitted sleeping at the airport now from more than 20 years and has explained how he managed to do it. The former chef told how he hid from security and lived on sandwiches and tea. He also went on to explain that he would deliberately get himself arrested on occasions so that he had a cell to sleep in. He began sleeping at the airport when mental health problems prevented him from working. He claims that these were caused by a difficult childhood

Sentencing Mr. Delaney was delayed until August however he was warned that he would be jailed again if he returned to the airport as he has now been given an ASBO preventing him from returning to Gatwick Airport for five years.

Mr. Delaney has provided an interesting insight into life at Gatwick Airport from the perspective of a homeless person as he explained that there was "a whole little community in there."

His time consisted of looking for work during the day whilst sleeping rough at the airport at night. He explained that it was very important to keep himself looking respectable so he could blend in however this did not stop him getting stopped at least 30 times whilst he was sleeping at the airport. He also mentioned stealing 10 CD's from a WH Smiths and then walking up to Police and telling them he had stolen them. He said "I got myself arrested to try and get help."

Mr. Delaney now faces un uncertain future as he said "the only place in Crawley for the homeless is a hostel called the Open House. But it has a reputation. I'm not a drug addict, i'm not an alcoholic. The airport looks very tempting but if i go back there i'll be in a Police cell by the evening."
