Southampton Airport Engineers Awarded For Implementing Revolutionary Lighting System

A top award has been given to engineers working at Southampton Airport after they came up with a brand new way of saving energy through lighting technology. BAA, owner of Southampton Airport and many others in the UK such as Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted have been actively encouraging new technologies that are environmentally friendly and that save energy. The engineers at Southampton Airport won the award after tough competition from many other BAA airports all running their own energy saving programmes.

BAA have installed the new lighting systems around the airport which are now saving energy and costs as well as helping the environment. The new system consists of an LED (Light Emitting Diode) which is developed and manafactured by Gemma Lighting and Displays Ltd. in Portsmouth. The LED poduces a white light that is exceptionally bright however gives virtually no glare which is excellent for airport applications.

The new system is highly efficient and produces little heat unlike a traditional incandescent lightbulb. According to figures on the BAA website the new lights cut down on CO2 emissions by around 75% compared to a traditional lighting system. Not only is the new system efficient and green it is additionally durable as figures indicate that the lights can operate for around 100,000 hours or 10 years of continuous useage.

In addition to this technology Southampton Airport have also been awarded the ‘City Champions Award for Innovation’ after construction of their solar powered roundabout was acknowledged as highly innovative. The roundabout is 100% solar efficient and uses LED's (light emitting diodes) for street lighting.

The Head Of Engineering Paul Burcombe was quoted as saying, “energy conservation is a real focus for us at Southampton Airport.
