Criticism Of London City Expansion Plans

Thursday 28th February 2008

London City Airport has defended its plans for expansion after it was criticised by labour MP John Austin for proposing an increase in aircraft traffic from 80,000 annual movements to 12,000.

The MP suggested that the increase in 'noise and and disturbance' would be too much for local residents. He went on to say that Barking and Dagenham council has objected to the plan and felt that Bexley was likely to also agree.

A spokesperson for London City Airport pointed out however that Mr. Austin has made a statement recognising the importance of the airport for the development of Docklands and she said "While there are undoubtedly some limited negative impacts upon the very local community as a result of the growth of the airport, it is important to strike the right balance between impacts.'
