Heathrow 777 Crash Still Baffling Investigators
Thursday 28th February 2008The British Airways Boeing 777 crash at Heathrow on January the 17th is still baffling air accident investigators as they attempt to find a cause for the inexplicable power loss that caused the crash landing.
In theory an airliner should never lose power to the degree that occured that January day at Heathrow Airport however the fact is that it did. This is without doubt one of the most curious and difficult to trace problems in modern times involving an airliner as the aircraft refused to provide the necessary power for a safe descent only a matter of seconds before the aircraft was due to touch down on the runway.
The crash came as a surprise for all in the aviation industry as the Boeing 777 is considered one of the safest airliners in service in the entire world. Since 1995 there has not been one crash that has resulted in a single fatality. When the aircraft was designed it was tested to prove that this kind of power loss would not occur. In fact tests had to illustrate that the chances of this kind of faliure were one billion to one which it passed at the time.
There are many theories as to the cause of the crash however no proof has yet been found for any of these. Investigators are focusing on 'abnormal fuel pump wear' on the aircraft indicating that they may have been a lack of fuel pumping to the engines however how this could have occured with both fuel systems simultaneously is almost beyond belief due to the extreme odds that this would be. It is unlikely that this would occur on one engine and fuel pumping system but for both to manifest the same problem is very hard to quantify.
The fact that investigators are struggling to solve the mystery is illustrating just how strange the problem is as usually with a wrecked aircraft and limited evidence a conclusion can be reached. This aircraft has both pilots explaining what happened, hundreds of witness statements and all the electronic data and flight recorders from the flight, yet despite this there are still no definitive leads to work on.
The crash has left all in the aviation industry struggling to understand what occured and with no definitive cause experts say that they cannot guarantee that it would not occur again without any changes being made.
