Veteran Airline Pilot Sacked After Flying Just 28ft Off The Ground
Monday 25th February 2008A senior British Pilot has been sacked after flying just 28ft off the ground at 320mph in a stunt to impress his VIP passengers. After taking off from the Boeing plant Captain Ian Wilkinson circled the aircraft around to make the flypast which was photographed and filmed by people on the ground. The Boeing 777 worth over £100 million did not even raise its landing gear on the close flypast and this proved too much for the airline bosses that sacked Captain Wilkinson from his £250,000 a year job.
It is understood that this is not an unusual thing for pilots to do although it must be with the correct permission. It appears Captain Wilkinson had permission from the control tower however not from the airline to make the flypast. Insiders have claimed that the matter may well have not gone very far if pictures and film had not circled the internet on sites such as You Tube.
The co-pilot of the aircraft Ray Middleton who took orders from the Captain was suspended from training duties for six months despite being unaware that there was not permission for the flypast and simply followed the Captains orders. Sources indicate that Captain Wilkinson is considering appealing against the decision.
