Nigerian Woman Jailed For Cocaine Smuggling
Tuesday 12th February 2008A Nigerian woman has been jailed for eight and a half years for attempting to smuggle cocaine with a street value of over half a million pounds through Stansted Airport in Essex.
Abosede Fehintola who is 57 years old was stopped by customs at the airport in October 2007 after she claimed she was visiting her pregnant daughter. When officers searched her case it still felt heavy when emptied. When the case was scanned by the x-ray equipment it showed concealed packages in the case lining. A small prick was made in the case to take a sample of what was in the case which tested positive for cocaine. After removing the drugs from the lining the cocaine totalled 5 kilos.
Sentencing Fehintola Judge Gratwicke said, "The importation of Class A drugs into this country is regarded as extremely serious. Cocaine in all its various forms brings nothing but misery, ill health and degradation to those who become addicted to it and stress and sorrow to those who are related to those addicted. Courts in this country have said that those who travel from abroad and decide to break laws to bring Class A into the UK must expect substantial prison sentences."
Passengers are asked if they witness any suspicious activities relating to the smuggling of drugs through any UK airport they should call 0800 59 5000 which is manned 24 hours a day.
