Major Construction Work Taking Place At Manchester Airport
Friday 8th February 2008Network Rail will be undertaking construction work and placing a new bridge on one of the main access roads to Manchester Airport. Outwood Lane will be closing from 22:00 on Friday the 15th of February and will be re-opening on Monday the 3rd of March.
The bridge that is to be installed weighs the same as ten 747 Jumbo Jets. Outwood Lane is the main route into terminals 1 and 3 however a good diversion is in place for traffic to take to reach terminals 1 and 3.
Manchester Airport Capacity Planning Manager Bob Longworth stated: "It is impossible to predict how much longer road users should allow but we don't expect major disruption. However, the morning and evening peak periods are always busy so we are advising people to leave a little extra time for the trip." Manchester Airport are expecting minimum disruption with only a minority to be affected by the closure of Outwood Lane.
It has been stated by Network Rail that the third platform that they will be constructing of which the bridge will give access to will greatly improve the passenger experience. It is hoped that the current problems with more than one train in a station in one time will then be resolved.
Any passengers driving to Manchester Airport are advised to allow extra time for their journey in light of the construction work.
