Another Emergency Landing - This Time At Derry Airport
Tuesday 22nd January 2008Only days after the crash landing of a BA Boeing 777 at Heathrow Airport there has been another incident with an engine shutting down - this time at Derry Airport.
One of the passengers on the flight described the whole experience as 'totally terrifying.' The flight run by Aer Arann was flying from Carrickfin in Donegal to Dublin when, with 25 minutes left of the flight one engine shut down without warning. The aircraft continued with its journey and landed on an emergency basis on just a single engine.
The emergency services were on standby when the aircraft arrived in case of any problems however the landing went without incident. One female passenger described how she felt when the passengers were informed that the aircraft had developed a fault. "It was absolutely awful," she said. "After we departed from Donegal we were told the plane had developed a fault and I looked out the right hand side of the plane and I could see that the propeller had stopped. It was really frightening and a totally terrifying experience for everyone on board."
Many of the passengers explained that they were worried that the second engine would stop and were hoping that the pilot they had was as skillful as the British Airways pilot John Coward. The pilot of the Aer Arann flight landed the aircraft perfectly and passengers described a large round of applause that occured as soon as they were on the ground.
