Hero Pilot Is Nicknamed 'Calamity Coward'
Monday 21st January 2008The pilot that has been hailed as a hero across the UK was nicknamed 'Calamity Coward' by friends after being struck by lightning twice! On one of the occasions he fell down a mountain after being struck by lightning in the French Alps and was paralysed for a time. Despite this when he regained conciousness he still managed to rescue a friend despite having lost the use of a leg.
John Coward, 41 has been speaking about the landing on Thursday describing his thoughts as he approached the runway. "When I came in to land, I thought, 'This is going to be a catastrophic crash. This is it', however he explained that the landing was "much better" than he felt it was going to be.
Sources have now touted Mr. Coward to be in line for the Queen's Gallantry Medal for his efforts in saving the lives of the 152 passengers onboard. If Mr. Coward is nominated for the award then other crew members such as the Captain and head of cabin crew will also be in line for an award.
