Birmingham Airport Officially Closes Oldest Runway

Thursday 3rd January 2008

Birmingham Airport has officially closed its oldest runway that opened in 1939 with the original airport buildings.

The Cross Runway as it is known unsurprisingly crosses the main runway so cannot be used at the same time. As a result of this the runway has become expendable and has actually been closed for the last three years. The official closure however brings a significant part of Birmingham Airports history to a close.

Birmingham Airports plans for a second runway were abandoned in 2007 despite predictions for a large increase in passengers at the airport by 2030.
