Luton Airport abandons 1 pound drop off fee

Tuesday 19th May 2009

Luton Airport has decided not to go through with plans to implement a £1 drop-off fee for motorists.

The plans received intense criticism by passengers and other groups saying that the charge was unnecessary.

The airport was expected to phase in the unprecedented surcharge to passengers on April 29 but recently had a change of heart.

A spokesman told The Telegraph "We haven't implemented it yet". He added: "There is no fixed date for it – we will advise passengers in due course. Nothing has been set in stone."

The reversal of decision was welcomed by the Air Transport Users Council who said: "We hope this will mark a reversal of the trend which has seen airports charging passengers directly for services."

"Passenger should be charged directly through their plane ticket."

Luton airport has imposed a charge of £1 for clear plastic bags to take items through security and introduced a £3 fast track queuing system.
