Talks Aimed At Averting Airport Strikes Begin

Thursday 27th December 2007

Talks to avoid the proposed airport strikes in the new year are set to begin today (Thursday). The two 24 hour strikes and one 48 hour strike are to hit airports in January and will affect all BAA airports in the UK.

It is estimated that if the strikes go ahead up to 1.3 million passengers could be severely disrupted, something BAA is keen to avoid. The union that has called for the strike Unite blames the Spanish ownership of the airport for not backing down over the dispute about pensions.

Many within the airline industry are worried about the severe disruption that could ensue especially as the date of the first strike, January 7th is when new regulations are put into action regarding carry-on baggage - something that was itself causing concern about possible disruption.
