Protesters break into Aberdeen Airport
Tuesday 3rd March 2009
Seven members of eco-group Plane Stupid broke into Aberdeen Airport on the morning of March 3, and finally turned themselves over to the police at 0820 GMT.
The protestors barricaded themselves inside a "wire fortress" on an airport taxiway while two others climbed onto the roof of the main terminal building.
Flights were suspended from the airport after the disruption, which began at 0315 GMT with protestors dressing up as real-estate developer Donald Trump, a supporter of the airport's expansion plans.
A banner with "Nae Trump games with climate change", written on it was hung off the front of the terminal building.
Protestor Dan Glass from Glasgow said: "We're here to say the expansion cannot happen, and our generation won't let it happen."
An Aberdeen Airport spokesman said: "This action is dangerous and highly irresponsible, not least because Aberdeen is one of Europe's busiest commercial heliports and a major transport centre for the north of Scotland, used by tens of thousands of people every day.
"There is no justification for this irresponsible action, which is deliberately calculated to delay and inconvenience the travelling public."
