Monday 26th January 2009
East Midlands Parkway railway station has been opened to the public after a £25 million investment and 10 years of planning.
The station near East Midlands Airport also has a park and ride service and uses locally sourced and recyclable materials making one of the greenest in the UK.
Trains will run every 15-20 minutes to and from London during peak times.
The new station's four platforms all have step free access to accompany the modern station building and 850 car parking spaces.
Network Rail owns the new station, while East Midlands Trains have been put in charge of station management.
Dyan Crowther, Network Rail route director, said: "East Midlands Parkway signifies our commitment to improving the rail network and providing high quality accessible stations.
"It is a great facility which provides new choices for passengers and will tempt motorists from the nearby M1 to use a greener form of travel and aims to reduce congestion in nearby city centres."
