Blackpool Airport introduces 10 pound surcharge

Tuesday 6th January 2009

Blackpool Airport has brought in a £10 fee for flyers counterbalanced by the introduction of free parking for 15 days.

The charge, known as an Airport Development Fee (ADF), is intended to help refurbish the facilities at Blackpool Airport and must be paid by anyone over 16 who enters the departure lounge.

The new ADF will help fund the £2m project set up to upgrade runway and passenger facilities and consequently offer incentive for new airlines to fly from the airport.

Chief Executive of Blackpool International Airport, David Kershaw, said he was confident that the free parking would attract more customers than they would lose with the £10 surcharge.

The local council were consulted over the proposal and gave the airport full backing, while Ryanair opted to cancel flights out of Blackpool in protest of the extra charge to passengers.

Aer Arran will be taking over the route between Blackpool and Dublin.

Norwich and Newquay airport already have an ADF scheme, making Blackpool the third airport to use the system.
