Gatwick shuts down as runway freezes over

Thursday 11th December 2008

Gatwick Airport runways were shut down today due to "extreme weather conditions".

Ice on the runway resulted in its closure, delaying over 60 flights in and out of the airport by 08:45.

A passenger onboard a plane since 06:30 contacted TravelMole saying they were told that they would be taking off at 11:00 at the earliest.

A spokeswoman for the BAA airport said “The runway was closed early this morning due to extreme weather conditions that were not forecast,”
