Soon all we will need to fly is our luggage and our mobile phone, according to Bmi, who are set to introduce a new paperless boarding technology.
The airline has been testing the idea since May by sending two-dimensional bar codes to passengers' handsets, which the crew then scan after online check-in.
The test subjects have been passengers flying services from Edinburgh and Manchester to London Heathrow and from Belfast City to Heathrow.
A spokesman for Bmi said that the trial had been a success and that an announcement in the next couple of weeks would reveal where across the network the technology would be used.
Bmi is the first UK carrier to use the 2D technology which allows passengers to simply wave their phone through each security checkpoint.
