BAA says it will accept an environmental watchdog which will be given rights to hold flights from Heathrow Airport if a third runway is approved.

The airport's owner declared that it would welcome being held to strict noise and pollution controls so long as plans for the third runway were accepted.

Chief executive of BAA Colin Matthews, said: "We have listened to the many arguments around expansion at Heathrow. Although the economic case remains compelling, we understand that we can only increase the number of flights if we can safeguard levels of noise and air quality."

The nearby village of Sipson, which has around 700 homes, would have to be destroyed in order to build the new runway.
