First Commercial Airliner Landing On Ice Runway

Friday 14th December 2007

A new record was made yesterday as an Australian team managed to make the first landing of a commercial airliner on a runway made purely of ice.

The Airbus A319 landed with no problems at the Antarctic site. This now means that supply's that took days by ship will now arrive in a matter of hours.

Despite the success of this flight there are no plans for commerical flights for passengers as the environmental problems in the Antarctic are already severe due to cruise ships visiting the area that would be compounded with aviation operating in the area as well.
