Aberdeen Airport Construction Programme Begins

Tuesday 12th August 2008

A £10 million construction programme has begun at Aberdeen Airport that hopes to attract international flights to the area.

The airport plans are in phases with the first phase due to be completed next year. This will see the construction of a double walkway that will keep arrivals and departures seperate. The aim of the walkway will be to enhance services and minimise delays. The latest security and safety standards have been met by the new walkway and it will be interesting to see the difference it makes to the efficiency of the airport.

Other developments will include brand new parking stands at a cost of £3 million that has been designed on the basis of newer aircraft that are progressively being introduced to help cut pollution and noise levels.

The second phase of the project will see work being carried out to the international arrivals hall. These improvements will see baggage reclaim areas and passport control all modified as well as the building being extended to create additional floor space.

Last month an announcement was made that confirmed an additional £2 million for a project to increase ease of use for passengers as well as safety measures. The money will also be used to create drop-off areas for taxi's and a pedestrian forecourt wil also be introduced. Security from terrorists will alos be a priority as concrete bollards are to be constructed to prevent a repeat of the events seen at Glasgow Airport last year.

The environment will also be considered in the plans as lighting will be replaced by LED's that use low quantities of energy and are highly efficient.
