Bristol Airport In Green Initiative

Thursday 7th August 2008

Bristol International Airport are in the process of puting forward plans for the construction of a 20 metre wind turbine that would be located between the new and old terminal buildings.

Currently a feasability study is underway for the plans as part of an expansion programme at the airport tha will see it attempt to become more environmentally aware. The new turbine once constructed would create approximately 1.5 million kilowatts of power every year for use at the airport, this equates to around 10% of the total usage of the airport on an annual basis.

Currently it is not clear if the turbine will need planning permission however however the airport are in the process of obtaining information on the proposals with a predicated installation and operation of the wind turbine by the end of 2008.

The wind turbine is not the nly measure the airport is taking to enhance its green credentials as work is also underway on a plan to work with local businesses and groups to enable the use of cooking oil to be converted into usable fuel for the airport vehicles. It is estimated that around 270 litres of cooking oil could be aken from local businesses that has the potential to be recycled and used as airport vehicle fuel.
